New scholarship program for mature women students

Nov 17, 2009

The Edward R. Murphy Center for Continuing Education and Distance Learning is pleased to announce the establishment of the Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship for Mature Women Students.   The College was recently awarded a $25,000 matching grant from the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation to establish this endowed scholarship fund for mature women students, 25 years and older, who wish to complete a bachelor's degree.  Two $1,000 scholarships for mature women students will be awarded annually to mature women students in financial need.   A matching donation was generously contributed to the endowment by Edward R. Murphy.

Charlotte W. Newcombe, a Philadelphia philanthropist, greatly valued higher education; during her lifetime she sent the children of several friends to college, taking a vigorous interest in their progress. In her will, she established the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation to continue her scholarship gifts. Her legacy continues today under the stewardship of the Foundation's Trustees.

In 1981, the Newcombe Foundation created scholarships for returning or second-career women who, during that time, were seldom able to qualify for financial aid.   Newcombe Scholarships for Mature Women Students help reduce dependence on student loans, and also recognize the tremendous efforts many women make to be good students and to complete degrees while juggling myriad other commitments.

The Edward R. Murphy Center for Continuing Education and Distance Learning provides associate and bachelor's degree programs specifically designed for adult learners living and working in the Central Pennsylvania region.
